Royan Stem Cell Technology Company creates biggest Cord blood and stem cells bank in Middle East

Managing Director of Royan Stem Cell Technology Company Morteza Zarrabi said fortunately, the biggest bank of cord blood and stem cells with 135,000 samples has been created in the Middle East.

Speaking to ISNA, Zarrabi said 1.5%-2% of pregnant women in Iran use cord blood bank services.

Among all the births that occur daily in Iran, we manage to collect cord blood samples of about 2% of deliveries.

He noted that storing various sources of stem cells, cord blood and peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) is the most important objective of creating this bank.

Apart from umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord tissue, embryonic membranes, amniotic fluid and placenta are valuable products that can be processed and used in medicine, he said adding that Royan Stem Cell Technology Company has put on its agenda creating a refinery of these items.


He noted that Tehran, Farsm Razavi Khorasan, Isfahan and West Azarbaijan are pioneer in storing cord blood bank.


He also referred to role of stem cells in controlling and decreasing diseases like diabetes and cancer.

For example in blood diseases, which are considered as a kind of malignant diseases, with the use of cell therapy, which is the use of hematopoietic stem cells and its transplantation, the disease will be cured in many cases up to 80%.

Now, in Iran, a clinical trial is defined according to the world's need for stem cells.


The most important clinical trials are used for Patients with cerebral palsy, CP disease, infants with high-risk births at birth, pediatric heart disease and for adults with Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and osteoarthritis.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zarrabi referred to Iran’s potential for exporting stem cells technical knowledge and biological products to other countries.

He said stem cell storage from deciduous teeth is to be exploited by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 20).


Dental pulp is an unmineralized oral tissue composed of soft connective tissue, vascular, lymphatic and nervous elements that occupies the central pulp cavity of each tooth. Pulp has a soft, gelatinous consistency.
